The old record for rushing yards in a game was 406….a milestone that was accomplished about a weeekkkk agooooooo….
History was made today out in Norman, Oklahoma. The 23rd ranked Oklahoma Sooners played host to the Kansas Jayhawks and it was a blowout of epic proportions. The Sooners dominated the entire game en route to a 44-7 pigskin beat down in front of a packed crowd at the Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The hot topic of the day came from the outstanding performance of freshman running back Samaje Perine. The freshman standout had 34 carries and rushed for a FBS single game record 427 yards while seeing the end zone of his carries 5 times. The play that helped him break the record came early in the 4th quarter when Perine ran the ball for 42 yards as the crowd caught heap of the accomplishment by chanting, “Perine, Perine!”.
The accomplishment has the sports world in such a huge uproar because of the timing in which the new record was being made. Last week, Wisconsin’s Heisman trophy candidate running back Melvin Gordon set the single game rushing mark against Nebraska in 3 quarters. The original record holder was TCU’s rushing back legend, LaDainian Tomlinson, who set the mark back in 1999. Coming into Saturday’s game, Perine led the big 12 in rushing yards with 1,001 while scoring 14 touchdowns. With an epic day like this, Perine is a diamond in the rough that the nation will be talking about real soon. With past Oklahoma Sooner running back greats like Marcus Dupree and Adrian Peterson, it is safe to say Samaje is on the correct path to greatness in Sooner nation. If he keeps up being a strong attribute with his dynamic rushing skills, Perine could have the potential to be a regular in the Heisman trophy running discussions. But for right now, the young baller is in the history books, and there’s no awards for that…..TROPHIES!
