Kendrick Lamar turns it up a notch on his first post-“i” release
Kendrick Lamar is supposed to be in a celebratory mood. Last night, he won his first two Grammy Awards–his unifying “i” record earned him trophies for “Best Rap Song” and “Best Rap Solo Performance”–and his former hypeman, ScHoolboy Q, was nominated for “Best Rap Album” for his major label debut, Oxymoron. Not bad for a couple of guys who couldn’t buy their way onto the radio just 4 years ago.
Well, instead, Kendrick is letting everyone know how he REALLY feels on his new release, “Blacker The Berry,” featuring punishing production from Boi-1da, who, ironically, lost to Kendrick as the producer of Drake‘s “0-100” last night. Kendrick’s tone is notably more aggressive than his happy-go-lucky-themed lead single, rapping vicious bars much like the ones below.
Sabotaging my community making a killing
You made me a killer
Emancipation of a real n***a
Whew. Listen below. And prepare for K. Dot’s sophomore album, due out later this year.
