Film Review: ‘Insurgent’ Starring Shailene Woodley

From the critically acclaimed Divergent series, Insurgent is now playing.

The movie Insurgent, based off of the hit “Divergent” book series has been one of the most anticipated movies of 2015.  This film continues to tell the story of Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her friends as they work to escape Jeanine and eventually stop her and her evil plot to take over the government.  The film starts off with the group hiding out in Amity because they have been separated from their Dauntless faction after Tris rescues Four from Jeanine’s clutches.  However, with Tris, Four (Theo James), Caleb, and Peter being branded as fugitives by the government, find themselves having little support and more problems as each hour passes.  It is when Eric and his army shows up in Amity that the real action kicks in in. The group has to seamlessly escape getting caught and make it out alive so they can regroup with the fractioned Dauntless who will support them in their cause to stop Jeanine and restore peace, all while finding out what their true purpose is in life, and where they really fit in with this society.

One of the reasons that Insurgent has been a movie that so many people have been looking forward to is because of its intense, hard hitting action scenes.  There were a lot of action scenes throughout this movie, and what this movie does right is its makes each action scene different from the next.  With all the crazy stunts done in each action scene, it is really hard to pick a favorite because each one was as memorable and intense as the one before.  And what is good about this is that with each action scene being different, it helps keep the attention of the audience which separates this movie series from the rest of the average action movies.

Another thing to mention is how well the actors did in this film, specifically Shailene Woodley playing her character Tris.  In this film, Tris has a lot of demons she needs to face regarding what she did during the “Divergent” plotline, and a lot of these demons are deep rooted and really have an impact on who Tris is as a character.  However, Shailene really pulled off the emotionality that her character needed.  Even when Tris was trying to be strong and show no fear, Shailene, being the talented actress that she is, was able to show a depth of character by letting the audience see that behind Tris’ tough exterior was a girl who is afraid and guilty of everything she has done.  Similarly, Shailene was able to flawlessly execute every dramatic emotion needed in order to emphasize the intensity of the plotline and everything that was happening in the moment, which is something that was very much needed for a movie like Insurgent.

Overall, the movie hits the mark in a lot of different aspects and is something that people, whether they are fans of the book series or not, should go out and see.  Insurgent hits theaters on March 20, 2015.
