Selena Lives Forever!
20 years ago today, we lost a legend, an icon, an idol to many, and overall, just a gorgeous person. At only 23, Selena Quintanilla touched so many lives with her music and personality that once you saw her hit that stage, it was impossible not to love her. As a kid, I mimicked her singing, dance moves, style and would even wear my mother’s red lipstick regularly with hopes to look like her (lol). She was just sincerely beautiful and dope, someone my sisters and I looked up to.
Tex-Mex wasn’t even a genre that was very popular in New York but once “The Queen of Tejano” got on the scene, you heard it everywhere. Countless, different records playing from every block, restaurants, stores, bodegas, record shops and mixtape corners. Her posters were seen everywhere and her videos were constantly on rotation on every television in the house. In the short time she was here, she made a huge impact on people all over the world.
Sadly, Selena was in the process of finishing her crossover album, Dreaming of you, when her life was taken by the president of her fan club and someone she considered a close friend. ” The sixth studio album was released posthumously on July 18, 1995, and ultimately became her first No.1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. Selena earned 7 No. 1s on the Hot Latin Songs, with “Tu Solo Tu” holding the top slot for 10 consecutive weeks. Seven of her albums peaked at No.1 on the Top Latin Albums chart, with her crossover album, Dreaming of You, staying at No.1 for 44 consecutive weeks” (Billboard.com).
Still today, we remain inspired and moved by the legacy she left behind. She had such grace to her and the love she showed her fans was heart warming, which is one of the greatest reasons we adore and remember her.
This song and video still make me heavy -hearted whenever I play it and I’m sure many fans of her can relate.
Also, check out “The Making of Selena“, but make sure you have plenty of tissue nearby, for it certainly is an emotional video.
