According to Black America Web, Sarah Adelia Graves and Shelbie Brooke Richards were in a group that constantly searched Jackson, Mississippi to find and assault African-Americans. One particular night, they found a victim, James Craig Anderson, which resulted in his death.

The women rode in a truck driven by Deryl Paul Dedmon, when he ran over Anderson back in November 2011. Part of their admission included revealing they recruited people at a birthday party that were interested in participating in looking for a Black person to assault, resulting in Dedmon calling Anderson a racial slur and running him over in a hotel parking lot, under direct instruction from Richards.
