Despite being 5-15 in his last 20 games, the Washington Redskins have picked up quarterback Robert Griffin III’s 5-year option on his rookie contract through 2016 season set for $16 Million. New Redskins’ general manager Scott McCloughan said that Griffin is “A good football player. He’s got good tape out there. Everyone knows what he did (2012).” McCloughan is banking on the 2012 Griffin to return; the former Heisman Trophy winner helped lead the team to the NFC East title and picked up Offensive Rookie of the Year along the way. Injuries, bad play, and poor attitude have resulted in his head coach being fired (Mike Shanahan), him being benched, and fans raining boos on him at every turn.
It seems as if the Redskins are going to see the RGIII product all the way though after giving up so much in the draft to move up the the number 2 pick to draft him right behind Andrew Luck. By giving Griffin this money, Head Coach Jay Gruden is forced to play him, even if he is clearly not the best option for the team at QB. The only thing that is guaranteed is that this saga will be over in the next two years. Either Griffin is the franchise for the next 10 years, or he is just like every other QB the Redskins have drafted over the past 10 years.
