22 year old, Kayla Mendoza was sentenced to 24 years in prison after killing two best friends while drunk driving. According to NY Daily News, in 2013, Mendoza drank two jumbo margarita’s before climbing in her boyfriend’s car and drove down the wrong way on the Broward County Expressway in Florida. Mendoza slammed head on and hit her best friends, 21 year old, Kaitlyn Ferrante and Marisa Catronio, killing them. Before killing the friends, Mendoza tweeted, “2 Drunk 2 Care” to her twitter page.
Before being sentenced, Mendoza spoke to the court and apologized to the families of the victims for her actions that caused eternal heartbreak to the families.
“No matter how much time passes they will never leave my heart, said Mendoza. “I think about them every day, and I regret my choices every day.”
Mendoza’s apology went on deaf ears to the victims families, who fought hard for Mendoza to get the maximum sentence of 30 years. Justin Catronio, brother of Marisa Catronio, spoke on the pain of his family after the untimely death of his sister.
“How do you forgive someone who’s ruined your life and your family’s life forever?”
After serving 24 years, Mendoza will never drive again and will be on probation for six years.
