Following the Detroit Public Schools teacher “sickout” protests , teachers have taken to Twitter to further spread awareness of their cause. On Monday, more than 60 schools were closed. The Detroit schools “sickout” protest continued Tuesday with more than 20 schools closing, according to Detroit Public Schools’ Facebook page.
Also on Facebook, an open letter from DPS teacher Pam Namyslowski has gone viral, taking aim at DPS emergency manager Darnell Earley, who opposes the protest. In the letter, Namyslowski goes on to outline the conditions, such as crumbling buildings and overcrowded classrooms. The letter has been shared more than 6,500 times since it was posted Friday.
Using the Twitter handle @teachDetroit, the teachers have been posting photos showing the unacceptable environment where DPS students and teachers are expected to go to school and work.
The photos show falling walls, mold, leaking ceilings, and even a bullet hole in a wall:
