Every once in a while, a Netflix original series blows up to the point where it’s the only thing everyone’s talking about. From the press to casual binge-watchers, it becomes a pop culture “thing.” Well, the Making a Murderer documentary series is that new “thing,” and it has not only become a fan-favorite, but it’s reopened the public’s eyes to the controversial case of Steven Avery, currently serving a very, very long prison sentence for murder, despite a wealth of evidence that suggests he had nothing to do with the death of a young photographer.
Like the Manitowoc County sheriff’s perception of Avery’s trial, Making a Murderer seemed like an open and shut case. However, its directors say not so fast. According to Moira Demos, one of the MaM directors, not only have they already interviewed Avery since the series went live on Netflix in December, but they plan on being there for any subsequent developments in his case. Co-director Laura Ricciardi went so far as in to say that the interview was recorded with “an eye toward including them” in any future episodes of the show.
It’ll be interesting to see what more the directors do with the show, especially considering just how much of a raucous it’s cause in the media.
