The family of Samuel DuBose has settled with the University of Cincinnati for $5.3 million over the death of their unarmed loved one during a traffic stop off campus.
In July 2015, University of Cincinnati Officer Ray Tensing shot and killed DuBose during a traffic stop that turned sour, with the whole ordeal captured by DuBose’s dash cam. National outrage ensued because the footage shows Tensing firing at DuBose in the midst of a heated argument, though Tensing claims it was in self-defense because he was being dragged by DuBose’s car.
The terms of the settlement include the family receiving a payout of $4,850,000. The University of Cincinnati will also waive tuition for all twelve of the DuBose children, totaling an estimated $500,000, bringing the value of the settlement to $5.3 million.
The UC department fired Tensing as a result, and he’s currently awaiting a February 11 court date to set a trial date for his charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter.
