Kyrie Irving was noticeably absent from the Cleveland Cavaliers’ beatdown of the Oklahoma City Thunder during a nationally televised match-up in Oklahoma City, and though his team chalked it up to “flu-like” symptoms, Irving revealed to the media yesterday that it had nothing to do with that.
During a brief interview with reporters, Irving, who turned in a 30-point performance in the Cavaliers’ Monday night loss to a retooled Detroit Pistons team, revealed that his absence was in fact due to an all-night bout with bed bugs–five “big ass” beg bugs, specifically–that kept him awake and itching for much of the night. When he woke up, Irving was highly bothered and ended up nauseous, leaving him unable to finish the game. It’s not like he needed to, the Cavs walloped the Thunder, and handed them their worst lost ever when Westbrook, Durant and Ibaka were all in the starting lineup.
To offer another side to the story, a spokesperson for the Skirvin Hilton Hotel released this statement explaining that Irving’s room was in fact riddled with bed bugs.
Unfortunately, every hotel occasionally has a case of bed bugs. This is one of those cases where a guest did bring in bed bugs to this particular room, and it was reported to us, fortunately, and we responded immediately and put the room out of order and all of the surrounding rooms to be inspected by a professional company. We actually had the company come out first thing [Monday] morning, and we found it was an isolated case in the one room, and we’re taking the necessary steps to remediate the problem.
Chances are, the Cavs’ 2017 trip to Oklahoma City won’t include staying overnight at this particular establishment.
