Tech Talk: Meet Atlas, The Agile Anthropomorphic Robot

Boston Dynamics has recently released footage of something that looks straight out of a sci-fi classic. His name is “Atlas” and he is the start of a new generation of Robotics.

Atlas is described as a “a mobility, humanoid robot designed to negotiate outdoor, rough terrain. Atlas can walk bipedally, leaving the upper limbs free to lift, carry and manipulate the environment.”

This technology is truly reminiscent of iRobot in its structure and functions. Although it is obviously not as advanced, it is a small step toward humanity having the access to bionic helpers with our everyday tasks.

Atlas is equipped with sensate hands that enable it to use tools designed for humans. It also includes 28 hydraulically-actuated degrees of freedom, two hands, arms, legs, feet, and a torso. It also has an articulated sensor head that includes stereo cameras and a laser range finder.

Atlas is powered by an off-board, electric power supply attached by a wire so it’s complete independence has yet to be worked out; however, research and development is in place to make a portable power source a possibility.
