Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz dropped a joint album, Collegrove, last month, the fitting culmination of their careers’ collision course that began with a fateful collaboration, “Duffle Bag Boyz,” nine years ago. The song, which helped catapult Lil Wayne into superstardom and put 2 Chainz–he went by Tity Boi back then–on the map, is a major reason why 2 Chainz has become a solo star in his own right, and he acknowledged that on the first track of Collegrove, “Dedication.”

That’s how Collegrove opens up, and “Dedication,” is exactly what its title suggests: an ode to the Young Money head honcho that has given several big-name rappers a platform to shine on. In a sit-down with Rob Markman and Genius, 2 Wayne talked briefly about the song, how it came about, and Wayne’s reaction to it.
