Yesterday, the news officially broke that, as rumored, slave abolitionist and American icon Harriet Tubman would be replacing Andrew Jackson as the face of the $20 bill. The U.S. Treasury would later clarify that Jackson is merely being pushed to the back of the bill, not removed from it completely, but the news still means that Tubman’s face will be the face you see when you flip a twenty right side up.
Social media erupted in celebrator memes, GIFs and animated sketches, and similarly, the hot takes began rolling in from the political world, beginning with Ben Carson, the former Republican Presidential long shot currently supporting Donald Trump in his bid to secure the Rep. nomination. Carson didn’t seem too thrilled about the move, and called Jackson a “tremendous” President before suggesting that maybe the $2 bill would’ve been the better place to honor Tubman.
Today, Carson’s shepherd, Trump himself, talked with Matt Lauer at an NBC News town hall that aired on MSNBC this morning, and offered his own opinion on Jackson being removed from the bill. Spoiler: He too would rather see Tubman grace the $2 bill.
I think Harriet Tubman is fantastic. would love to leave Andrew Jackson, and she would maybe come up with another denomination. Maybe we’d do the $2 bill.
Why?
Andrew Jackson had a great history and I think it’s very rough when you take somebody off the bill. Andrew Jackson had a history of tremendous success for the country.
Watch the unfortunate interview clip below.
