Beyoncé’s Lemonade short film featured several women of color she felt represented strength and power. Many famous faces made a cameo in the visual, including tennis champion Serena Williams.
The professional athlete spoke with The Associate Press about her experience and how she came to have a part in the singer’s visual album. Williams, who is ranked number one in women’s single tennis, made an appearance on the song “Sorry,” which is a break-up song, taking on a “sorry, not sorry” attitude when Beyoncé declares she’s going about her business.
“I have known the director since I was like nine years old,” Williams said. “I know Beyoncé pretty well, so they were like, ‘We would love for you to be in this particular song. It’ about strength and it’s about courage and that’s what we see you as.
“She told me that she just wants me to dance, like just be really free and just dance like nobody’s looking and go all out,” she added. “So that wasn’t easy in the beginning, but then it got easier…I thought that particular song on the visual album was really a strong song, and it was also really fun at the same time.”
