Highlights From The 70th Annual Tony Awards

The 70th Annual Tony Awards took place Sunday night [June 12] in New York City honoring the best shows to hit Broadway. Faces lit up as Hamilton took home a whopping 11 awards.

This year’s Tony Awards was filled with music, dance, and laughter as British TV host James Corden set the tone for a fun-filled, light-hearted award show. Many acceptance speeches acknowledged the massacre that took place in Orlando just hours before, highlighting the power of love to unify a nation. The show was dedicated to the victims of the Orlando attack and unity shined through every second of it.

Hamilton was nominated for 13 awards and took home 11, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Leading Role. Leslie Odom Jr. took home the award for the Best Actor in a Leading Role and Lin- Manuel Miranda for the Best Book of a Musical. The musical took home a myriad of other major awards like Best Choreography, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Costume Design in a Musical, among many others. Hamilton won the award for the Best Musical while The Humans won an award for the Best Play.

Eclipsed was nominated for six Tony Awards and Clint Ramos took home the gold for Best Costume Design of a Play.  A View From the Bridge won Best Revival of a Play and The Color Purple won Best Revival of a Musical as well as Best Actress in a Musical taken home by Cynthia Erivo.
