Amidst all the excitement this morning [Friday, July 1], Lakers fans may be scratching their head about their team’s free-agency deal. In the first deal where a player has actually signed with a new team, Timofey Mosgov, according to ESPN, has reportedly signed a 4-year, $64 million dollar deal with the Lakers.
Mosgov will earn around $16 million dollars per year, after averaging 5.8 minutes per game in this year’s playoffs with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The amount of money that Mosgov has reportedly gotten is going to become the new norm in the NBA for role players, because of the huge rise in the salary cap. This move is a somewhat puzzling move, since the Lakers are still in rebuilding mode, but L.A. has always been known for having a presence down low. Mosgov does provide a defensive anchor for this young Lakers team, and he does have one or two moves in the post. The most important number Lakers fans need to know is Mosgov’s age: he turns 30 later this month.
Only time will tell how Mosgov fits into L.A.’s plans, but for now, Mosgov is certainly happy to be a Laker. Make sure you keep it locked on The Source for more free-agency news throughout the week.
