Yesterday [Thursday, July 14] the New York Times reported there had been at least 130 cases of K2 overdoses this week in New York City. Nearly a fourth of those cases happened this past Tuesday [July 12], when there were 33 overdoses from K2 on the border between Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick.
This very large number of cases nearly equaled the total number cases for the entire month of June, the New York Times said. The NYPD believe this spike in overdoses is due to a bad batch of the drug, rather than a spike in usage.
K2 is a synthetic drug, commonly sprayed onto leaves, which gives it an appearance similar to marijuana. However, as the New York Times reports, its effects are more closely related to more potent drugs such as bath salts.
While the City claims that it has cracked down on the synthetic drug, citing the fact that there were a staggering 1,200 emergency room visits related to K2 last July, many in the neighborhoods, such as those out in Brooklyn, still believe the drug poses a serious problem.
