Making a Murderer is the docu-drama that took Netflix by storm late last year, as directors and producers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos took viewers on a wild ride chronicling the unfortunate events that led to the arrest, conviction and sentencing of Wisconsin man Steven Avery, who appears to have been framed–at least according to the show–for the murder of a magazine photographer in 2005. In 2007, he was convicted of the crime, and sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence, a sentence he’s still serving.
The series became such a hit and struck such a chord with viewers that a petition that amassed over 500,000 signatures asking for a re-examination of Avery’s case made its way to President Barack Obama‘s desk. However, POTUS responded by reminding the public that he had no jurisdiction in a state case.
Still, whether or not the state of Wisconsin conspired to send Avery–an ill-educated man whose gullible nephew was also charged and convicted in connection with the murder–to prison for a very long time because of a grudge that a law enforcement officer held against him and his family remains to be seen. That will likely be the primary subject matter of these new episodes that were just announced today.
