Police Officer Shot and Killed in San Diego; One in Surgery

Late Thursday [July 28] two officers were shot during a traffic stop, leaving one in the hospital and the other dead this morning.

Both officers were treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital with one of the officers dying from multiple gunshot wounds while the second officer underwent surgery early Friday morning  and has since been expected to survive.

“Despite heroic efforts by officers on scene and heroic efforts by doctors to save his life, I’m heartbroken to report they were unable to save him and he is deceased,” said police chief Shelly Zimmerman.

It was at around 11 pm that the officers pulled over a vehicle in San Diego’s Southcrest neighborhood somewhere between Acacia Grove Way and 36th street, the two immediately requested for backup at the scene.

When other officers arrived, the two men were found with multiple gunshot wounds in their upper torsos. Law enforcement immediately covered the area for all possible suspects near the Chollas Creek open area, urging residents to stay inside their homes.

According to Chief Zimmerman, one suspect was in custody and was being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound.

The names of the officers have not been released. While their wives and immediate family were notified, extended family members are currently being made aware of the tragic circumstances.
