In sports everybody loves comparisons.
Look at how folks compared last season’s Golden State warriors to the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team. Also look at Dallas Cowboys fans are getting nostalgic over the one two punch of the Dak Prescott led team and comparing it to the Troy Aikman team of the 90s.
Such is the same even in tennis. Tennis legend Pete Sampras stopped by the Scoop B Radio podcast and chatted with CBS’s Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson and discussed his rivalry with Andre Agassi in the 90s.
Sampras is 20–14 all-time against Agassi. What is most memorable between the two is their 1995 U.S. Open Finals matchup. Sampras defeated Agassi 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
“What Andre and I had was pretty unique,” said Sampras. “Both being American, both being different. We dressed differently, we played differently, our personalities were different, it was a great clash.”
Tennis fans want to see parody like those two and according to Sampras, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are the closest. “It’s a good rivalry and it’s exciting to watch,” he said. “Both of those guys battle and it should be a great one.”
Sampras furthered the discussion by comparing Novak and Djokovic vs. he and Agassi: “Today it’s not quite as sexy,” he said.
“But I think you look at Djokovic and Murray as the two best players. It’s a great rivalry and they’ve played each other a bunch, they’ve played great matches. It may not have the same appeal as say Andre and myself, for a few years. But if you look at it, the last two greats were Roger and Rafal when they had their moments: lefty, righty, both very different.”
