Chicago-bred rapper Vic Mensa gave his thoughts on the gun debate, specifically addressing  Donald Trump’s idea of arming teachers with guns since a mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school killed 17 people earlier this month.

Mensa was very clear in his contrast to the idea, explaining that it is not a real logical solution, nor even an idea, to the current gun problem in the United States. He added that the gun debate over whether to arm teachers or not is all a diversion to further line the pockets of gun supporters in the National Rifle Association (NRA).

“Giving guns to teachers, it’s absolutely asinine,” Mensa said in an interview with TMZ. “Anybody saying that clearly has never been to a public school, and it’s all a diversion from big money lobbyists with the NRA. It’s just a distraction so that people could keep making money off of these kids getting killed.”

He also makes a stark contrast of the debate in the United States to his hometown of Chicago, which had the lowest rate of 650 murders alone in 2017, in contrast to 2016 with 771 murders. “As much problems as we have in Chicago, we sittin’ in Chicago like thank god we don’t have school shootings. Ya’ll killin’ yourselves.”

Later in his argument, Mensa addresses that AR-15 guns should be banned completely.

“It’s the people they’re voting for that are making money off of them getting killed. It’s a shame. Point blank, you gotta ban AR-15s.…. It’s being made a much more complicated issue than it really is. It’s not complicated. America is built off of blood and greed and that’s the way it’s always been. Does that mean that’s the way it always has to be? No….These weapons are unnecessary”.
