Many people think that mixing a few old songs is enough to make them a DJ. Well, it’s not that easy, especially if you dream of becoming an underground DJ. A club DJ or an underground DJ has to find a correlation between the type of music he loves and whether the crowd responds positively to that music or not.
Sean Doron, a renowned underground DJ from Tel Aviv, Israel, believes that DJs should be responsible for introducing new types of music to their audience. They should captivate the audience with the music they love, and that’s far more difficult than mixing old songs.
The first step to becoming a successful underground DJ is to figure out whether your audience prefers your genre of music or not. For example, Sean loves the house and warm groovy sound. He even recorded many songs from this genre on popular labels like Rebellion, Flying Circus, Bla Bla Music, Rotary Cocktail Records, and Inmotion Music. But it took him time to educate his audience about this type of music.
One of his famous tracks, Cala Comte, is a perfect example of what he means when he says the DJ should figure out his audience’s musical taste. He said, “I wanted my followers to acquire the taste of the music I produce slowly. Cala Comte didn’t become a chart-topper in its first week like some of my other songs. It took time for people to feel the floaty, ethereal vibes mixed with haunting vocal samples. I knew that this wasn’t the type of music that many people had heard before. But I wasn’t afraid of trying something new. And that’s how Cala Comte became a huge hit. It started to play at many parties and discos after a few months. Soon, I started getting requests for this song wherever I played. It meant that people were becoming used to this type of music.”
The overwhelming success of Jasmino
Sean loves diversity. He thinks that underground DJs should experiment with various tunes. Every song should sound different so that the audience can distinguish them. Talking about diversity, Sean mentioned, “If you listen to Cala Comte and Jasmino, you will quickly figure out why they are so different. I’m talking about these two songs specifically because people often tell me that they love the songs for various reasons. They say that Jasmino has magical vibes appropriate for special moments, such as sunrises and sunsets.
On the other hand, they like Cala Comte because of its trippy synths and fizzy modulations. Every underground DJ should keep experimenting until they hit the right chord. It involves a lot of trial and error, but once you find the right mix, it sticks in your audience’s mind for years.”
There is no doubt that Sean is one of the best underground DJs of his time. His hard work and dedication towards his craft show that he still has the enthusiasm to keep delivering hits and make his fans groove on the dance floor.
