Having an eye for future talent, cultivating it and not being selfish in the development of the artists is rare in today’s world. For Jabari Kafele, possessing all of the above and providing the pathway to an artist to flourish is just a common day’s work.
A titan in breaking R&B, Jabari is taking off bringing his first artist, Rileyy Lanez, to a video that has collected over 18 million views, gained over 50 million streams, and ultimately landing at Columbia Records. Lightning struck twice and will continue to do so, as Jabari has now pushed Nelccia to the forefront of the genre, with a viral debut and even more movement on the way.

What sparked your love for R&B?
What sparked my love for R&B was being exposed to so many legendary R&B artists from different eras at a young age. Artists such as Luther Vandross, Sade, Sam Cooke, Whitney Houston to Mary J Blige, 90’s Brandy, and many others were drilled into my head since birth. I’m a 90’s baby and the preference of music for my family was always R&B and Traditional gospel.
How would you describe yourself in the current entertainment and R&B scene?
I’m a leading influencer and force on the come-up within the R&B scene in the respective lane that I’m in. I keep my ears to the streets. To be honest, there’s no one independent that’s doing what I’m doing with upcoming singers and in such a short time frame. I’m actually discovering the artist, investing my own money, and in most cases, I’m releasing that artist’s debut song and getting the artist signed to a major label within a year after their debut goes viral. This happens a lot in rap but I have yet to come across another moving the way I am in this R&B space fully independent. Respectfully.
What are some of your goals for the forthcoming year?
I have two major goals for the forthcoming year. My first goal is to discover and break two artists that will be relevant 20 years from now. My second goal is to get an imprint deal with a major label. I’ve been offered A&R positions but I’m chasing after having my own imprint/ label with a major label.
What do you look for when you decide to work with talent?
The first thing I look for is work ethic. I released debut singles for the last two artists I was working with, who are now signed to major labels. Their work ethic was measured on how often I see interaction with fans, how often covers are posted, etc.
When managing an artist what do you let know is key for them?
The irony with this question is so many people think I’m a manager and I’m not. I’m actually a one-man music production company and label. I know it sounds crazy. All of the artists I’ve worked with had existing Management I had to work alongside due to the artists being under 18 years old. I let all parties know that it’s key to believe! Not only believe in me but it’s important to believe in myself even when feeling discouraged or overwhelmed. There’s always a great reward at the end of the tunnel. I always emphasize that the end of the tunnel should be your guide.
