This is a “brave new world” for music creators. Today, even teenagers in a bedroom with a laptop could potentially create massive worldwide hits with nothing but their laptops. If almost anybody can make music and record professional releases on a budget, is there still any use for studios, producers and creatives to specialize in that particular aspect of what happens behind the scenes of a great song? According to Hexproof Music founder Mike Thompson, there will always be space for great production.
Good music production is not necessarily about the gear, about having a fancy studio and millions of dollars worth in outboard equipment. Production is about people, it’s about a different perspective. Even artists who reportedly make bank by creating successful music out of their bedrooms (i.e. Billie Eilish or Sufjan Stevens, only to mention a few) have relied on outside help to bring their music to the next level. A producer can help an artist refine his or her material, adding a final sheen of professionalism to sound, and perhaps bringing out new ideas that an artist alone might have missed out on.
Many artists working without a producer might risk never fully uncovering their full potential. You might be able to make and record really good music on your own, and that’s great – but working with a producer can really be a fantastic way to accomplish something else and drive your legacy as an artist to an even greater level. Think about it, if a teenager can write a hit in his or her room using a laptop, some heavy hitters could surely do the same, right? Big names such as Kanye West, Ed Sheeran or Justin Bieber would surely have no problem setting up a killer home studio and record quality music, so why are they still working with producers? It’s not because of the gear or the fact that they “need a producer to make music.” It is because they know that an external creative input can be incredibly valuable. The collaborative aspect of making music is at the heart of the relationship between artists and producer, and the incredible chemistry that can come out of it is truly undeniable.
