From Foster Care to Indie Pop Artist: Anthony Malascalza Shares His Story

Anthony Malascalza is an indie-pop artist who overcame a tough childhood to achieve his dream. Born to immigrant parents, Anthony was orphaned at age three and moved to foster care with his two sisters. Growing up in a foster home, he was bullied and teased for his ethnicity and family situation. Anthony dealt with those difficulties by turning to music as therapy to cope with what life threw at him.

As an adult, Anthony has made it his life’s mission to bring awareness to the issues that foster children face. In 2018, Anthony released “No Ordinary Love” as a single for the Foster Children Awareness Campaign in May during National Foster Care Month. When he couldn’t find anyone who would produce his work, he released it himself on iTunes and Spotify—the ultimate example of self-drive. The track received lots of love from the public, garnering over 200K streams in a month.

That was just the beginning for Anthony. In the next six months, he worked hard to perfect his skills. His determination and creativity led Anthony to create catchy tunes that people can’t help but enjoy. His songs deal with tough topics about living with mental illness, being misunderstood by others, and finding love in a world where we are all too often lonely.

Today, Anthony’s life is full of joy: He loves playing the guitar, composing songs, and motivating other people to be better versions of themselves. He recently released a new single, “Flex,” on SoundCloud and will open for Katy Perry at her show in Manila later in the year.
