Chances are you have never met someone who dislikes music. Music is a profoundly human experience. Even if a person only listens to one artist or one song throughout their lives, they likely do so because it brings enjoyment. As Jayd Deroché so eloquently puts it, “a heart that does not sing is a heart that does not exist”.
Of those who do not enjoy music, some people at least have an appreciation for the craft behind it. They might not have an emotional reacting to songs, but they can still determine if a piece is well-constructed. Some people might love the 1812 Overture while others simply don’t care for it. The latter group will likely admit it is an exceptional composition but not to their tastes. The eerie classic Night on Bald Mountain might have no effect on people, but they credit the intense use of certain instruments.
Jayd Deroché also acknowledges the people who experience musical anhedonia. This is a brain activity that places listening to a song between boring and distracting. It is a fairly rare condition that affects only 3-5% of the global population. What these people do suffer from is being mocked as they cannot comprehend that a person cannot enjoy music. Jayd Deroché recommends those individuals listen to a song that might bring some empathy. If music connects us and is a universal language, a track about trying to understand an unfamiliar human condition can certainly add a new perspective to those who are affected by music.
Jayd Deroché is not perplexed by these individuals, but those who have an intentional dislike towards music and block themselves off to its effects. While it is certainly that person’s choice, Jayd Deroché only wishes these people would let their hearts sing so they may enjoy a richer and fuller life.
