Known for his grizzly delivery and hardened lyricism, Aske has returned with his latest single, “Never Going Back.” The Tucson native is a natural when it comes to encapsulating his past adversity into music that is both motivational and meditative. Once again, he flawlessly demonstrates this.
This track is a shining example of Aske’s iron will, with his detailed storytelling touching on a variety of topics: his past aspirations as a sports star, his coming of age, and the loved ones he’s lost. “Never Going Back,” doesn’t just tell the stories of his past. It gives a look into Aske’s current mindset. He raps with grit over a backdrop of wandering choirs and tenacious snares: “Breaking out the box, they thought they had me buried.”
Not many rappers can match a verse like this in its intensity. But the guest feature does. Dave East complements the song’s overall message with stories of his own past struggles: “The way we was raised felt like a horror flick.” On a song like this, East’s presence just makes sense. The duo comes together with their unique deliveries, ideas, and real-life experiences to create something special.
