A recent study from Edith Cowan University reveals a concerning trend: more than half (54%) of 1,008 participants from the US, Europe, and Australia reported fair to poor mental health. The pandemic has had a significant impact, with nearly half (44%) of the respondents indicating that it has negatively affected their mental well-being. Most affected are women (48%) and Millennials (45%).
Amidst this, it’s crucial to have artists like the young and talented Maisha Chowdhury, better known as Maisha C, who connect with these groups through her relatable and honest lyrics. The emerging indie pop artist offers comfort and validation to those struggling with mental health.
Music as a form of catharsis
As many listeners turn to music for comfort and understanding during difficult times, Maisha C is filling a much-needed niche in the music scene, particularly among female composers who use their music to discuss mental health issues openly. Her honest and raw lyrics provide a sense of comfort and validation to those who are going through similar experiences.
Drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Adele, Bon Iver, Birdy, Sara Bareilles, and Natasha Bedingfield, Maisha C is quickly establishing herself as a rising songwriter in the music industry.
Her debut in 2022 had critical acclaim, and her three released songs showcase her emotional depth and maturity as a songwriter. With her honest approach to mental health struggles, Maisha C is destined for playlists worldwide and is a voice for those who struggle with anxiety and sadness.
Writing songs that deal with healing
Maisha C struggled with fitting in during her childhood and found solace in music and words. She took notes from talented artists and songwriters like Hayley Gene Penner in order to sharpen her writing and gain experience in order to create powerful music. The inspiration for her song “Crying In The Dark” came from personal experiences of feeling not heard by others, feeling alone, and feeling misunderstood as a young adult in her growing stages.
Brought to life by Vasuu’s stellar producer work, the song is an emotional ballad that touches on perseverance, lost love, and hope. It stands out in the current music scene dominated by electronic beats with its organic sound and Maisha C’s powerful words. Through her lyrics, she conveys a message of hope and encouragement to those facing hardship.
Producing more music
Although her lyrics often touch on dark and heavy subjects, Maisha C aims to continue spreading positivity and using her talent to inspire others to reach their full creative potential.
“The most empowering feeling in the world is to use any kind of pain you feel and use it as a way to create purpose and transmute the pain into creativity,” Maisha C says.
“The most important thing you can do for yourself is learning to validate yourself instead of relying on others. You can become unstoppable and begin to help uplift people around you when you can control the way you think about yourself,” she adds.
Maisha C is treating her fans to two new tracks this month. “What About Us,” featuring Vasuu, was released on Valentine’s Day. Meanwhile, her other single, “The Bridge,” was produced by Alexander Vincent to elicit emotion and maintain listeners’ engagement throughout the song. Fans can pre-save the track now, and it will be available for streaming on February 28th.
