Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has roots in Germany, where it gained enough popularity to become mainstream and was later adopted in Japan and the United States. Since then, it has evolved to include different musical styles, including electronica, techno, dubstep, trance, and hardstyle. As EDM has gained more listeners and creators, the originality of the genre has come into question, with listeners criticizing current music as “sounding the same.”

The pressure to churn out unique-sounding music for current creatives is very high. One artist who is sending waves through the industry is PYTI. PYTI is an award-winning music producer from Belarus. In 2021, he worked with Spanish record label Blanco y Negro to produce five songs, some of which include “Multiband,” “Move On,” and “Get High.” His music has garnered over a million streams across different platforms, and the number is bound to rise after his two new songs.

The first song PYTI has released in 2022 is a dubstep song called Focus. The song’s opening immediately feels easy; you could almost say it’s not trying too hard. It is not too stripped down and has a catchy melody that sets the pace for the rest of the song. The drop sounds full because of the contrast of the bass and melody and the slight hints of reverb. However, there isn’t anything too out of the box going on in the song’s first two minutes. Although dubstep, by definition, is a loop of repetitive patterns, the structure in the first half is still very textbook. All the ingenuity happens in the third minute. The outro is very powerful; all the elements make it sound like a form of controlled chaos. The highlight of the outro is a sub-bass that lingers between powerful and almost noisy and subtle pitch bending that adds that touch of complexity.

His second song is Fortuna (2023), a dance and EDM song. Fortuna is a feel-good EDM song, and for PYTI fans, it would perfectly match the ambiance of a chilled Saturday at home. The song begins with well-modulated background vocals that start soft and then grow to form the foundation of the song. As the beat drops, the key Fortuna has been set in works to its advantage because it gives the song that up-beat, trance-like feel. The song’s arrangement is also quite interesting because although it is one song, it gives the feeling of being a mashup without sounding disjointed. The only other thing that PYTI’s song Fortuna could have done with is more time. There were elements of creativity in the song that felt like they could have done with a little more development. For instance, the melody could have done with a final bigger drop or more space to let it breathe before rounding up the song.

From the sound of his two new songs, PYTI seems hard at work in the studio, experimenting with different sounds and approaches to his music. He is not the typical status-quo EDM artist who is set on replicating other sounds, a trait his fans will appreciate after listening to Focus and Fortuna. Both of his new songs are available for streaming across all platforms.
