Kolyn Boyd on Revolutionizing Music and Storytelling Through FLOW and World of Travel TV

Kolyn Boyd’s impressive career as a director and producer has positioned him alongside some
of the most influential names in the music industry, including Carlos “Soundman Los” Smith,
who has collaborated with superstars like Nicki Minaj. Boyd’s partnerships with such visionaries
have profoundly shaped his creative process, particularly when integrating music into
storytelling.

“Carlos, or Soundman Los, as he’s known, is an incredible talent and one of my closest
collaborators,” Boyd shared. “His knowledge, creativity, and support give me the confidence to
bring my ideas to life. Working with him on projects like World of Travel TV has been nothing
short of transformative. His ability to score films and connect music with visuals adds emotion
and depth that visuals alone can’t achieve. Together, we’ve explored how music, especially
rooted in authenticity and hip-hop culture, can amplify the stories we tell.”

Through his work on FLOW, a platform he developed with Garnett March, Boyd has also joined forces with industry leaders to create new opportunities for emerging artists. March, a former Interscope Executive, brought unparalleled insight into the intersection of music and digital media, a perspective that Boyd has embraced and expanded on. “Garnett taught me a lot about strategy, reminding me to move with intention and focus on the bigger picture,” Boyd said. “He also reinforced the idea that all storytelling, whether it’s through movies, TV, or music, follows the same principles of adaptability, strategy, and consistency.”

FLOW, originally envisioned by March, is designed to amplify the voices of up-and-coming
talent, particularly people of color in the music industry. Boyd supported March in bringing this
vision to life by creating engaging projects that break down barriers for aspiring creatives. One
standout initiative was a bilingual daily news show broadcast in English and Spanish, which
demonstrated FLOW’s commitment to accessibility and diversity.

“FLOW provides direct access to key leaders in the music industry, breaking through traditional
gatekeeping,” Boyd explained. “It’s a platform that empowers aspiring artists by connecting
them with the people and opportunities that can elevate their careers. We’re creating
pathways for collaboration and helping artists navigate the industry with fewer obstacles.”

Music continues to play a central role in Boyd’s storytelling endeavors, particularly through
World of Travel TV, a series he co-created with his partner and journalist Lindsey Granger. With Carlos Smith as the show’s music supervisor, the series explores the cultural significance of music in destinations across the globe. “Music is integral to understanding the culture of the
places we visit,” Boyd said. “For example, in Harlem, we explore the legacy of jazz; in South
Africa, we dive into the roots of Amapiano and Afrobeats. It’s not just about adding a
soundtrack, it’s about using music as a tool to tell the story of a place, its history, and its
people.”

Boyd’s passion for music and storytelling is evident in his future plans. He and Lindsey aim to
spotlight emerging musicians and unique genres, introducing audiences to sounds they may not
have encountered before. “Genres like Amapiano and Xhosa Jazz are rich in history and
emotion. By showcasing them, we’re not just promoting music, we’re fostering cultural
connection and education,” Boyd noted.

As technology continues to evolve, Boyd sees platforms like FLOW shaping the future of how
audiences connect with artists and their music. “Technology has revolutionized the way we
experience music,” he said. “It’s allowed for unparalleled access, breaking down barriers
between artists and fans. Platforms like FLOW take this even further, creating innovative spaces
for interaction, engagement, and collaboration.”

For Boyd, the intersection of music, storytelling, and technology offers endless possibilities.
Whether it’s through FLOW or World of Travel TV, he remains committed to using these tools
to connect people, cultures, and stories in meaningful ways. “Music is a universal language,”
Boyd said. “It transcends borders and brings people together. Through our work, we aim to
create moments of discovery, connection, and inspiration that resonate on a global scale.”
