Jim Jones is celebrating over three decades of sobriety — a journey that’s been partly influenced by his time spent with Kanye West. The Dipset rapper has been in Tokyo, Japan, with Kanye in recent weeks, where the two former Roc-A-Fella artists have been working on music and fashion projects.
In a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday (January 29), Jones shared his excitement about being sober, revealing that he hadn’t smoked weed or seemingly drank alcohol for several days — something he hasn’t experienced since the early ’90s.
“I ain’t smoked in five days. I’ve been around here bouncing like a kid, like I’m in high school. I definitely got that high school feeling,” Jones said while walking through Tokyo. “My body ain’t feel this pure in a minute! I was in the club dancing last night for like 45 minutes straight, sweating.”
In the caption, he wrote, “I ain’t been sober in 33 years this sh!t feel good can’t lie but I need that HT soon in a land lol im addicted lol but at least I know when it’s time for business I’m disciplined to stop cold turkey for what’s important. Japan is and was a vibe. Till next time, arigato.”
A potential factor in Jones’ newfound sobriety may be Japan’s strict drug laws, which impose severe sentences for those caught in possession of marijuana.
Over the past week, Jones has been a notable presence by Kanye’s side. The Chicago rap legend has been based in Tokyo since last year, working on his upcoming album Bully. The two were seen hanging out over the weekend, enjoying the club scene, listening to music, and reviewing clothes. Jones also hinted at contributing to Kanye’s new album.
