Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are close to finalizing a deal for a super middleweight championship fight on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas, according to ESPN. The bout will see Crawford move up two weight classes to the 168-pound division without a catchweight or rehydration clause.
Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh, who organized Crawford’s last fight, is behind the event, though contracts have yet to be signed. Before facing Crawford, Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) is set to defend his three super middleweight titles on May 3, likely against William Scull, with a win making him undisputed champion once again.
Alvarez, 34, remains one of boxing’s top stars and ESPN’s No. 5 pound-for-pound fighter. Since losing to Dmitry Bivol in 2022, he has won five consecutive fights, including victories over Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), ESPN’s No. 2 pound-for-pound boxer, will not fight before facing Canelo, as he builds up to 168 pounds. The 37-year-old, a four-division champion, is coming off a dominant TKO win over Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023, securing the undisputed welterweight championship. Now, he looks to make history against Alvarez.
