C-Tru’s My Spirit Fights On: Telling Marina Camilla Hubmann’s Story of Survival and Justice

In a world where stories of trauma are often left untold, C-Tru refuses to remain silent. With his latest release, My Spirit Fights On, the artist has crafted a deeply personal narrative inspired by Marina Camilla Hubmann’s harrowing experiences. More than just a song, the track and its accompanying music video serve as a cinematic journey into her past, exposing the raw truth of her experiences and the strength that carried her through.

The music video, filmed in Austria in August 2024, is as much a film as it is a visual representation of the song. Hubmann, never one to take the conventional route, worked meticulously to ensure that every frame carried weight. Instead of recreating the horrors she endured, she opted for symbolic storytelling—portraying the helplessness of her younger self while also illustrating the sanctuary she found in her imagination. The narrative takes viewers through her past and present, showing not only the abuse she suffered in the foster care system but also the healing she has achieved. In a striking creative choice, the young Marina encounters her adult self, symbolizing the reconciliation of her past and present.

“The real-life abuse I suffered was too horrific to re-enact, so I chose to show it symbolically,” Hubmann explains. The video’s setting plays a crucial role in reinforcing the emotional weight of the story. Cold, desolate surroundings mirror the isolation and neglect she faced in her childhood. The antagonist, the perpetrator, is depicted alongside the director of the children’s home, illustrating the systemic complicity that allows such suffering to persist. But in contrast to the darkness of the past, the present-day sequences highlight the love and safety she has found—particularly in her husband, who represents the stability she never had as a child.

One of the most striking moments in the video comes at its conclusion. A newspaper article appears on screen, delivering a fictional but aspirational form of justice—one that Hubmann hopes will eventually become reality. This closing statement is amplified by a quote she holds close to her heart: “Hatred, destruction, or violence towards oneself or to others will never alleviate pain.” These words are not only a message to victims but also to those who perpetuate cycles of abuse, many of whom were once victims themselves.

The music video’s production was a labor of love, with Hubmann overseeing every detail. She cast the actors, selected and prepared the locations, and ensured that the final product was a precise reflection of her vision. A key figure in the project was C-Tru himself, who traveled to Austria to play the role of the narrator. His presence in the video adds another layer to the storytelling, guiding viewers through Marina’s journey with intensity and empathy.

“C-Tru made the long journey to Austria and played one of the most important roles as the narrator of the story,” says Hubmann. “He understood me on all levels right from the start, and it was great working together to make the vision a reality.”

For C-Tru, the experience was equally profound. “Marina opened up to me about the horrific abuse she lived through and how she dreamed of one day finding a way to tell the world about it. We hope that by sharing her truth in this song and through this music video, we can inspire those suffering from similar traumas to speak up and tell their stories as well. I’m proud that my music can be a platform for positive change.”

The song’s emotional depth is further accentuated by the haunting yet powerful vocals of Tariah, whose voice weaves seamlessly into the video’s storytelling. Her delivery adds an ethereal quality to the track, amplifying the emotional weight of Marina’s journey while reinforcing the resilience at its core.

Beyond its visual storytelling, My Spirit Fights On has made an immediate impact in the music world. Released in January 2025, the track quickly climbed into the Top 100 of the iTunes Hip-Hop charts, a testament to the emotional depth and raw authenticity of the song. This achievement solidifies C-Tru’s status as one of the most compelling independent artists today, proving that music with a purpose can resonate far beyond entertainment.

But for both C-Tru and Hubmann, this project extends beyond personal catharsis. They hope to bring awareness to a problem that continues to be overlooked. “It is important to us, and we believe that in 2025, it is time to educate and sensitize society to the fact that violence against helpless children exists and that it can affect anyone,” says Hubmann. “In our case, it affects children who come from socially disadvantaged families or don’t even have parents. They can’t confide in anyone because the system holds together and the perpetrators are protected.”

With My Spirit Fights On, C-Tru is not just telling Marina’s story—he’s using his platform to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced. It’s a harrowing but necessary statement, one that demands attention and, most importantly, action.
