Renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump is contributing $10,000 to Tennessee State University’s (TSU) NCAA Division I men’s hockey team, marking a historic moment as TSU becomes the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to field a D1 hockey program. The donation supports the team’s $5 million fundraising goal to sustain its first two seasons.
“I am honored to support Tennessee State University as they break barriers and bring diversity to the sport of hockey,” Crump stated. “This team represents more than just competition on the ice — it’s about expanding opportunities, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations of Black athletes.”
TSU announced the creation of its hockey program in 2023, aiming to increase diversity in a sport where Black players made up less than 1% of NCAA men’s hockey in 2019. In April 2024, TSU made history again by hiring Duanté Abercrombie as its first head coach, making him both the first Black male coach to lead a D1 hockey team and the first HBCU hockey coach.
“This program is bigger than hockey,” said Abercrombie. “It’s about opening doors and showing young athletes of all backgrounds that they belong in this sport.”
TSU continues to raise funds for scholarships, facilities, and operations ahead of its 2025-26 debut season. Donations can be made by texting “TSUHockey” to 41444 or visiting TSUTigers.com/Hockey/Donate.
