Cypress Hill is bringing their acclaimed Black Sunday album to life in an entirely new medium. In partnership with Z2 Comics, the legendary West Coast Hip Hop collective is set to release Cypress Hill: Black Sunday, a graphic novel that traces the band’s creative journey and cultural impact during one of the most turbulent times in Los Angeles history.
Slated for release on June 3, 2025, the graphic novel dives deep into the making of Black Sunday—a pivotal moment in Cypress Hill’s rise to superstardom—set against the explosive backdrop of the 1992 L.A. Riots, the Lollapalooza festival circuit, and the group’s time on tour with the Beastie Boys. Writers Noah Callahan-Bever and Gabriel Alvarez piece together a vivid narrative, while artists Ken Knudtsen, Sebastian Piriz, Giorgio Pontrelli, Felix Ruiz, and Guillermo Sanna deliver an immersive visual experience.
Z2 is no stranger to collaborating with the group, following up on their successful 2022 release, Tres Equis, which chronicled Cypress Hill’s early years. This new edition brings the saga full circle, giving fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at the music, moments, and mayhem that shaped the Black Sunday legacy.
B-Real, one of the group’s founding members, offered insight into the roots of the album’s title and eerie aesthetic. “We called it Black Sunday because we’re Raiders fans and also Black Sabbath fans. So Black Sunday felt like an appropriate title for the album. We tried to match the imagery up with what we were putting down musically,” he explained.
The book also includes a new interview with Cypress Hill, B-Real, Sen Dog, and percussionist Eric Bobo, reflecting on their legacy and the lasting influence of Black Sunday. Designer Jay Papke, who created the album’s original haunting cover, also returns for a candid discussion about the visual concept and shares never-before-seen design details from the early 1990s.
Z2 President Josh Bernstein praised the collaboration, calling it an essential continuation of the Cypress Hill narrative. “The work we started together on Cypress Hill: Tres Equis only gets better. Collaborating again with Cypress, Noah and Gabriel to tell the true story of Black Sunday resulted in another sequential masterpiece. It’s an honor working with B-Real, Sen Dog, Muggs, Bobo and the entire Cypress Hill + Z2 families to ensure this project smokes.”
