SOURCE SPORTS: Mets Aim For The Sweep Against Colorado With 8-2 Win, Soto And Nimmo Hit Back-To-Back HRs

The New York Mets made it two in a row against the struggling Colorado Rockies with an emphatic 8-2 win at Citi Field on Saturday, sparked by early offensive fireworks and another solid outing from Kodai Senga. The win pushed the Mets into a tie for first place in the NL East with the Philadelphia Phillies, with both clubs continuing to widen the gap over the third-place Atlanta Braves, who sit 8.5 games back.

The Mets wasted no time getting on the board, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela, who came into the game with a bloated 7.14 ERA. The right-hander was shelled for six earned runs on nine hits over just 4.2 innings, as Mets hitters peppered him with hard contact all afternoon.

The defining moment of the game came in the third inning, when Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto launched back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches, electrifying the crowd and breaking the game open. Soto’s long ball was particularly meaningful; it marked his third homer in the past five games and signaled a return to form after a quiet two-week stretch in which he batted just .208 with no extra-base hits.

Since May 25, Soto has hit safely in five of six games, lifting his batting average from .264 to .276 while slugging .588 over that stretch. His third-inning shot against Senzatela traveled 422 feet to right-center, an emphatic reminder of his elite power and plate discipline.

Nimmo, who had three hits on the day, also reached base four times and scored twice. Francisco Lindor chipped in with a two-run double in the first, while Pete Alonso added an RBI single to cap the early scoring.

On the mound, Senga gave the Mets another quality start, tossing 6.1 innings and striking out seven. He allowed just two earned runs—one on a solo shot by Ezequiel Tovar in the opening frame, and another on an RBI single from Thairo Estrada in the seventh. Senga lowered his season ERA to 3.26 and improved his strikeout total to 69 on the year.

The Rockies continued to struggle on both sides of the ball, managing just five hits and committing two errors in the field. With the loss, Colorado remains stuck at nine wins, still searching for their elusive tenth victory as it remains at the bottom of the NL West standings.

The Mets (33-21) will go for the sweep on Sunday, sending lefty José Quintana (3-2, 3.81 ERA) to the hill against Colorado’s Ryan Feltner (1-4, 5.62 ERA). First pitch is set for 1:40 PM ET.
