Whitney Houston’s iconic The Bodyguard soundtrack has solidified its place in music history, extending its lead as the top-certified film soundtrack ever, according to the RIAA. On June 25, the 1992 album was certified 19 times platinum for U.S. shipments, further solidifying its legacy as a cultural and commercial juggernaut.
Only six other film soundtracks have ever gone Diamond, including Saturday Night Fever (16x), Dirty Dancing (14x), Purple Rain (13x), Forrest Gump (12x), Titanic (11x), and The Lion King (10x).
According to Billboard, Houston also remains the only Black artist with three Diamond-certified albums. In addition to The Bodyguard, her self-titled 1985 debut stands at 14x Platinum, while her 1987 follow-up Whitney is 10x Platinum. Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and 2Pac are the only other Black artists with two Diamond albums.
The RIAA also updated the certification levels of 10 Whitney Houston singles. Among the standout milestones: “I Will Always Love You” is now 11x Platinum, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” is 8x Platinum, and The Bodyguard hits “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You” are certified 4x and 1x Platinum, respectively.
