In the summer of 1993, a young and ambitious record executive known as “Puff Daddy” launched what would become one of Hip-Hop’s most influential imprints; Bad Boy Records. To introduce the world to his new label, Puff led with two records, the first of which was a breakout single from a then-unknown Brooklyn MC named Biggie Smalls. That debut track? “Party & Bullshit.”
Featured on the soundtrack for Who’s The Man?, a Hip-Hop-driven comedy starring Yo! MTV Raps hosts Ed Lover and Dr. Dre, “Party & Bullshit” marked the arrival of a new lyrical force in rap. With raw energy and razor-sharp wordplay, the track laid the foundation for Biggie’s meteoric rise and gave fans their first taste of his signature flow.
Long before the world would come to know him as The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie and his Junior M.A.F.I.A. crew were just hungry Brooklyn kids chasing a dream, with nothing on their minds but “Party & Bullshit.”
What followed was history. Biggie would go on to become one of the most revered MCs the culture has ever known, with Puff and Bad Boy Records serving as the launching pad for a new era in East Coast Hip-Hop.
Salute to Biggie, Puff, Bad Boy Records, Junior M.A.F.I.A., and all of Brooklyn for changing the game with one record and never looking back.
