Ice Cube is stepping into a take on the sci-fi classic War of the Worlds and the trailer just landed, giving fans a glimpse of something that blends modern paranoia with vintage source material.
Inspired by HG Wells’ legendary 1898 novel, this reimagined version features Cube as a top cybersecurity analyst for Homeland Security. His job is to monitor digital threats through a mass surveillance program until an unexplained attack forces him to question whether the government is keeping secrets from the public and maybe even him. What sets this remake apart is its format: nearly the entire film unfolds through computer and phone screens, with much of the suspense centered around Cube’s character seated at his command desk.
Joining him in this high-tech thriller are Eva Longoria and Clark Gregg, adding extra star power to the tense narrative. The production team promises an immersive and unconventional viewing experience. “The idea was organic. When catastrophes happen today, we experience them through our devices. That insight shaped the storytelling and tech used to create this immersive thriller,” said producer Patrick Aiello.
He continued, “For the first time ever, a studio-scale sci-fi epic has been produced using a format that places audiences inside the action through the lenses of phones, computers, and tablets. It’s a visceral, first-person experience designed for big screens in a language and format that is now natural within our daily lives.”
The updated War of the Worlds is scheduled to hit Prime Video globally on July 30.
Cube has been stacking wins lately. In other news, he confirmed he’s inked a deal with Warner Bros. for a long-awaited sequel to his iconic Friday series. “We are making another Friday. We just closed a deal with Ice Cube to write and star. It’s going to be called Last Friday,” said New Line’s COO Richard Brenner.
Although additional cast details remain under wraps, the announcement is big news for fans who have waited years for another chapter in the cult comedy saga. Cube has long expressed his desire to continue the series, but previously cited issues with the studio as a roadblock. Now, with a new agreement in place, it looks like he’s finally getting the green light.
