Jay-Z Defends Times Square Casino Proposal Amid Broadway Opposition

JAY-Z Becomes First Black Male Artist to Have 10 Albums Go Double-Platinum

Jay-Z is addressing concerns from Broadway leaders over his Roc Nation-backed plan to bring a Caesars Palace casino to Times Square. The proposal, in partnership with SL Green and Caesars, is among those vying for one of three downstate casino licenses available in New York City.

The Broadway League, representing theater owners and producers, has organized the No Times Square Casino coalition to push back on the project. But Jay-Z, in an interview with City & State New York, insists the casino will boost Broadway rather than threaten it.

“There is only one Broadway, and we respect that,” Jay-Z said in a written interview. “This project isn’t about taking away from Broadway – it’s about strengthening it. Casino visitors will buy tickets, fill seats, book dinners before shows, and keep hotels in the area full. The things Broadway needs – more ticket sales, added security, cleaner streets, and jobs that support workers between shows – are what this project will make possible.”

Jay-Z and his partners argue their proposal will bring new jobs and increased tourism, adding stability to one of the city’s most iconic cultural districts.
