Bill Cosby won the hearts and respect of legions of fans during his years as Dr. Huxtable on both The Cosby Show and its spin off, Different World.  The plot, characters, script, and even settings of both sitcoms presented higher education in not just a positive, but necessary light for the growth and achievement of African-American people as a whole.  The “Cosby Show”, in essence, became a model for proper living and a guide for the successful upbringing of respectable world citizens.

It is sadly ironic that some 20 years after these poignant contributions to network television, Bill Cosby’s real-life affiliations with institutions of higher learning seem to be dissipating one by one.

Ten years ago, Boston’s Berklee College of Music awarded Cosby an honorary doctorate degree and issued a scholarship in his name.  The scholarship title has been revoked.

North Carolina’s High Point University held the actor is such high esteem that he was appointed to adviser on their national board.  This appointment has since been revoked.

After receiving a doctorate in education in 1977 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Cosby held the position of co-chair of the school’s fundraising campaign.   Although his earned degree has not been stripped, Cosby has agreed to resign from the campaign post.

Finally, Cosby holds a baccalaureate degree from Temple University and is a member of their Board of Trustees.  As of November 2014, his status with the university remains intact but a 2005 alumnus has initated an online campaign to force the Board to relieve him of his duties.
