Initially, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives dunbend the fire as being suspicious due to multiple points of origin, ruling it as “incendiary”, meaning any accidental or natural causes were ruled out.

While there have been no arrests, the ATF, FBI, and Houston police are currently investigating the fire alongside the Arson Bureau.

Citing a “recent spike in hate incidents targeting mosques nationwide,” the  Houston Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations have urged law enforcement to investigate any bias in the case.
