With the New York Knicks missing the NBA playoffs for the third consecutive season, there is much debate in regards to the future of the franchise. Will the team land a major free agent this offseason? Or better yet, who will be the permanent head coach. After giving Derek Fisher his walking papers mid-way through the year, Kurt Rambis has stepped in for the interim. Rambis seems to be the most likely candidate for the gig considering he is a close friend and former teammate of Knicks President Phil Jackson.
For what its worth, Rambis is not guaranteed the position, as the organization did say they will be looking at other possible candidates. One man who is vying to be the franchise’s head coach is Knicks legend Patrick Ewing. The Hall of Fame center is currently the lead assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets and coached as an assistant with various NBA teams for the past 13 years.
Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Ewing expressed strong interest.
“You know, this is a great fit for me. I have my number up there [in the Garden rafters]. I still live in the area. If I get an opportunity for an interview, I’d be happy.”
“I see people who don’t have the same amount on their résumé as I do and still have gotten opportunities. It is what it is. All I can do is continue to work, continue to get better at my craft, and hopefully one day somebody will give me an opportunity and I’ll show that I’m ready.”
