A fight breaking out in the bathroom of Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington, Delaware ended in the death of a 16-year-old girl, according to CNN.
Police are currently saying they are still conducting interviews and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. Reports suggest police are investigating whether or not the fight had to do with a boy. No one has been charged in connection with the fight and the girl’s death yet.
According to reports, the fight started at 8:15 a.m. yesterday morning [Thursday, April 21] in a bathroom on the main floor of the school.
“There was an altercation that initially started between two people, and my understanding is that additional individuals joined in against the one person,” said Gary Fullman, chief of staff to the Wilmington mayor, according to reports.
The student was transported by helicopter to A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children where she died after being badly injured.
The friends of the 16-year-old girl, Amy Inita Joyner-Francis, explained she was not a likely target for that type of violence. Reports quoted Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams at a news conference saying, “My heart is broken. I am so upset that a young lady lost her life today. Things like this shouldn’t happen. My heart bleeds for the family, the kids who go to this school and the administrators and our city.”
Classes were held Friday morning, but the school was dismissed at 11:15 a.m. and grief counselors were on hand.
