VH1 has announced Queen Latifah will be the first artist honored at VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens, saluting women in Hip Hop.
The official announcement made today [Monday, June 13] also marks the return of the award show after a six year hiatus.
“After a six-year hiatus, the revered VH1 Hip Hop Honors is back celebrating the best and brightest in hip-hop with a twist. This year’s live event will pay homage to the female pioneers, trailblazers and trend-setters who led a movement and infiltrated the ranks of the male-dominated genre to make their voices heard and still do today.”
VH1 revealed additional female honorees will be announced later this week.
“Since its inception in 2004, VH1 Hip Hop Honors has recognized the luminaries who broke new ground and propelled the genre into the cultural phenomenon it has become. From Hip Hop’s pioneers like Public Enemy and Tupac Shakur to Def Jam Records and Russell Simmons, VH1 has honored hip-hop from its origins through the numerous phases of its musical evolution.”
In addition to being an honoree, Latifah will also serve as the event’s executive producer. According to reports, the Hip Hop mogul is also producing a new show on the Travel Channel called The Place to Be, set to premiere this July.
Hip Hop Honors will take place on July 24 at 9 p.m. in New York and air live on VH1.
