With two Grammy nominations under his belt, Billboard charting records and platinum plaques at the age of 23, Pooh Beatz is no stranger to producing a hot record. So when it was time to round up the best talent in Vegas to work on Kehlani’s latest album “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t,” it’s no surprise his name was brought up. Pooh gladly accepted the invitation to work on the R&B singers project which he described as an amazing experience. He produced the track “Open (Passionate).” “Kehlani is probably one of the coolest artists I’ve ever met,” he said. “She’s super dope.”
Although Pooh was on track early in life to pursue a career in football, his college experience led him to music. He was into music at a young age and growing up in the streets of Detroit, he had a lot of family and friends who were music artists. It wasn’t until his sophomore year of college that he met his current manager who encouraged him to move to Atlanta to take music seriously. Long days and nights in the studio became overwhelming but motivating at the same time. He started getting placements and through networking he met people that continued to connect him.
One of his friends had a good relationship with DaBaby. They ended up going to LA to do a session with him and that night “Suge” was made. At the time, Pooh didn’t know that that moment would land him his first Grammy nomination. Pooh also produced “Yikes,” for Nicki Minaj. The beat was one that he was holding onto. At the time he thought it would be perfect for Nicki. When his friend hit him up to ask for a beat pack for the Queen, he included that beat in it and that’s one of the ones she ended up using.
He recently released a single with Jack Harlow “What’s Poppin,” and just produced “That’s What I Said,” for Bhad Bhabie. The Detroit native best describes his sound as “club music,” as his beats instantly make people want to move. He wants to be known for making an impact on the music world but also helping others while having an impact on the youth.
