Police in Nashville has made an arrest on a twenty-five-year-old man for vandalism and felony arson charges on Saturday night after the Metro Nashville courthouse was set on fire.
The “I will breathe” rally in Nashville began days after the unfortunate death of George Floyd. A black man who died at the hands of police brutality in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The protest is just one of many across the world. Protestors have gone to extreme measures in efforts to demand a change to the response from police at a scene where a black individual is involved.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Specialized Investigations Division detectives along with SWAT officers have arrested Wesley Somers on vandalism, felony arson, and disorderly conduct charges. This wouldn’t be the Tennesee native’s first charge as he has previously been charged for domestic assault and child neglect in two separate cases.
The historic courthouse’s windows were broken, the walls were covered in graffiti, on top of the building being set on fire. A historic plaque that paid tribute to the civil rights movement was also found destroyed. Police were able to identify the twenty-five year old with the help of the public. Somers’ bail has been set for $255,000.
The investigation of the courthouse fire is still under investigation along with the continuous vandalism in the area.
