Notorious for his distinct image and appealing music, Young Zerka remains a multi-talented music artist, winning the ears of listeners on an international level. As an exclusive feature on The Source, we had the pleasure of speaking to Young Zerka in Tirana, Albania. Media professional Denisa Debocci completed an exclusive in-person interview, giving glimpses of Young Zerka’s life, upcoming album ‘Part of Me’ and inspirations. “I used to collect The Source magazines growing up,” explains Young Zerka. This one is one for the books.
The Albanian native was born in Korçë, Albania, placing his roots in Europe. He would later live in London raised a Jamaican household, which indefinitely influenced his style and sound. Ultimately moving back to Albania, he is now based in a nation currently known for international stars and songs.
Speaking on his upcoming full length album ‘Part of Me’ to launch this coming Fall, he says that the project tells his story from “start to finish” although we believe he is just getting started. There is no one genre to label a talent like him. He expresses himself through reggae, pop, and every genre in between. A diverse and versatile artist has the ability to create strong songs in any language, vibe and genre. Compare “Pa Gajle” and “Ting Ting” for example.
With faith that his unique identity puts him at an advantage in the music industry, Young Zerka is ready for an international takeover. “Some of my inspirations were Bob Marley, MJ, Tupac, UB40, and Lil’ Wayne,” he tells us. Growing up influenced by the most iconic artists of the world, it’s no wonder his tunes gravitate around the world. Countries he has toured include major cities in the United States of America, Albania, Kosovo, Germany, Switzerland and counting.
Highlights of his career include his hit “Like Rihanna” and “Harem”, his win on Kenga Magjike 2014 (“Magic Song” – Albania Based Contest) w/ the iconic Aurela Gace, and television appearances on TopChannel’s Top Show Mag, Kush Luan, She’s on Top, RTV’s Fol Shqip Show, Marina Na Na Na, collaboration w/ international star Faydee on “Belly Dancer” and counting.
“This is an artist who cannot be duplicated. He fuses a hybrid of multiple cultures and genres together beautifully, all while throwing in his fun personality within his music,” says Denisa (interviewer). “I have faith that the upcoming album will be a career changing project and I see it as a revamping of his career.”
Young Zerka rose to mainstream fame in the early 2010s, despite being professionally active in music since 2007. Through his resilience and uniqueness, he has made his mark. When asked about advice and motivation, he tells us “Work and keep on working, don’t let the bad energy get to you.”
While the album tells his story, the release of ‘Part of Me’ sparks the beginning of a new one.
