Joey Elgersma and Lee Stuart Speak on Bread & Butter’s Sport & Street

TheSource.Com

Nikeisha Nelson had the pleasure of speaking with Joey Elgersma and Lee Stuart of Bread & Butter’s Sport & Street Festival.

How long have you been in association with Bread & Butter during Sport & Street?

Joey:  The association goes from a long time ago. We are both from Amsterdam and we were working as stylist and as creative collective from Amsterdam. We  worked with a lot of street brands. 3 years ago I moved over to Berlin to become the Product manager of Sport & Street and than I had a partner that decided to leave after two years so I decided to kidnap Lee  and bring him from to Berlin to partner up with me.

What were you doing before you got taken by Joey?

Lee: I was styling as a freelancer. I pretty much had the city on lockdown and I wanted to learn some more, so i thought this was the perfect opportunity. Ive been in Berlin for three months now, working really hard and learning a lot from Joey.

How do you choose the acts that perform?

Joey: First its what we like and what we think fits with bread and butter and sports street wear, from there we look at whats hot in the moment, who has a relationship with fashion.

Lee: The guys we choose this year are most relevant at the moment and they all have the certain style that fits well with what we trying to do with Sports & Streets. We also thought about some other acts to bring out like French Montana or Chief Keef.

Joey: The thing is Berlin fashion week is  such a great week everyone comes out  and all the hotels are booked up the vibe is so intense. So we just try to bring the right artist that transports our message that we are doing here and connect people. A tradition when we first started was doing a party on Thursday night and we invited a lot of DJ’s who had a collective and the party became so successful that we thought “why don’t we do two nights” and because we had such a strong line up this year. We just wanted to give the people the opportunity to really see it so thats why we did a festival this year. Unfortunately one act was missing this year.

Do you want to speak on that?

Joey:  Haha I already spoke about that via twitter.

What are some of your memories with The Source Magazine?

Lee: I used to steal The Source Magazine  when I  was growing up, like when i was 14-19 i used to steal it every month i couldn’t afford it because it was import. I remember going on vacation and i was so mad my mom because she  threw away all my source magazines without telling me and i think she threw away like five years worth of magazines, I was so pissed.

Joey: It’s really hard to find The Source in Berlin, in Amsterdamn they were everywhere. When I  was moving from Amsterdam to Berlin i remember finding an old Source that made me completely crazy back in the days, that was  the cover of Lil Kim with the leopard bikini, i got very excited with that cover.

Lee: My favorite cover was with Def Squad the background was white and a lot of florescent colors and the one with Lauryn Hill where she looked absoulty beautiful, the one with Death Row and the Dipset one.
